- City in Alberta, Canada, on the Bow River, in
- the foothills of the Rockies; at 1,048
- m/3,440 ft it is one of the highest Canadian
- towns; population (1986) 671,000. It is the
- centre of a large agricultural region and is
- the oil and financial centre of Alberta and W
- Canada. Founded as Fort Calgary by the North
- West Mounted Police 1875, it was reached by
- the Canadian Pacific Railway 1885 and
- developed rapidly after the discovery of oil
- 1914. The 1988 Winter Olympic Games were held
- here. It has oil-linked and agricultural
- industries, such as fertilizer factories and
- flour mills, and is also a tourist centre;
- the annual Calgary Exhibition and Stampede is
- held in July. The University of Calgary
- became independent of the University of
- Alberta 1966.
